How to use a diesel price index.
Many fuel surcharge agreements use a weekly on-highway diesel index. The key is to keep the index, base price, and MPG method consistent.

Use the base price.
The base price is the diesel number where surcharge starts. Below it, surcharge may be zero.
Step 3
Divide by MPG.
The diesel spread divided by MPG gives the surcharge per loaded mile.
